Do yourself a big favor.
If you have a no-ask friend raising party, you can save time and money by staying home and eating a TV dinner in front of the tube.
Your fundraising results will be exactly the same!

What is G-E-A-R?
Discover the donors desires, match them with your organization’s mission, and you have a contributor. Here’s how GEAR works.
GREET your current and potential donor like and old friend, with your warmest hello and a strong handshake.
ENGAGE by imagining your prospect has one spinning gear on top of their head (their desired results for their contribution). Imagine that the gear is spinning to fast to perceive the size.
Keep asking open ended questions until you know what the gear is like.
You have a lot of spinning gears on your side (your organization’s activities). Can you find a perfect match for the gears? When you think you have the right gear, ASK for the contribution.
Your donor will be REWARDed and satisfied. You will earn kudos for brining in a contribution and your organization will have a new contributor. Makes sense, right?

Choose your hosts with care!
Your hosts are the most critical gears in the party machine. Your success relies on their performance at the party. They will be your surrogates, engaging new guests and asking for money at the end (that’s “E” and “A” of GEAR)
You know the type of people you’ll need, those Board members that just L-O-V-E people. Are you getting this picture? People such as stock brokers, insurance and real estate agents are all good choices. You’ll be asking them to present and close, so choose people with that type of work experience. No matter whom you choose, they not only must be willing to listen, but also to agree and execute your plan for the party. Be sure to invite your Board President to attend the party, to lend importance to the event.
The people that work in the industries I mentioned above make their careers by giving presentations and closing sales in person. When you present the plan, they will understand it. You may learn some tips from them too.

I named my book “Raise Money Now” because I wanted to clearly express what results to expect from the book.
I gave it the wrong name…..
It should have been Raise Money NOW, right NOW! I mean…..
The theme of the book is to create a situation where people are enthusiastic and engaged and then ask them for contributions-while not waiting for the “time to be right”.
So I need to find another way to express the idea of “now”
Do you have any ideas about this?

Many non-profits and businesses get their mission and their business mixed up. Look at your organization right now and evaluate.
The business of non-profits is finding new donors and increasing current contributions. The mission is the good work that the organization does. Too many non-profits reverse the order and spend too much time on mission and are in serious financial trouble. Have you seen this happen?
Here’s the plan -

Creating a speakers bureau (a list of people who are ready and willing to speak for your cause when asked), makes it easy to find a appropriate presenter for your parties and other events.
The Speakers bureau has 2 categories:
1. Inside your Organization:
People within the organization who are recognized as exceptional speakers
2. Outside yourorganization:
People who are not regularly involved with your group but could be contacted and asked if they would be willing to speak about their specialty or something related to your organization’s work.
Personally, I like classical chamber music groups. But you may find that a renown speaker talking about something fascinating is better. Some groups like authors, college professors, world travelers etc.
But, let me tell you what may happen. You will receive a lot of suggestions to use Uncle Ed, Aunt Mabel, Joe from accounting and a whole bunch of amateurs, because “everyone” likes them. I’ve gotta tell you, no one wants to hear them. You are looking to bring new people into the group and so you’ll need an extremely high quality program with wide appeal. Thank Uncle Ed. We can see his slides another time.
To find speakers from outside of your organization, ask your Board and volunteers. What is the hidden benefit of a group of people canvasing all your community leaders and discussing your organization with them? Even if they decline to be part of the Speakers Bureau you will have introduced you organization to all the important people in your community.
Sounds good?
Tomorrow I’ll post of list of possibilities get you started.

After writing the “Donors, House Parties and Money” book, you would think that putting together a webinar would be easy right? Well, I’m about 18 hours into this and I only have half a presentation in PowerPoint.
……And I thought it would be easy!
